Bon Iver

Bon Iver is an band, and one of Justin Vernon’s current and most notable music projects to date. The band also consists of Mike Noyce, Sean Carey and Matt MacCaughan.

The name ‘Bon Iver’ (pronounced “bon ee-VAIR”) is a play on the French phrase ‘bon hiver;’ for ‘good winter’. Vernon independently released Bon Iver’s debut album: For Emma, Forever Ago in 2007; most of which was recorded during a four-month stay in a remote cabin in Wisconsin, USA.

While the debut Bon Iver album was mostly performed by Justin Vernon alone in a cabin, the much-anticipated follow-up is a more lush and expansive affair, with a strong supporting cast employing reverbed guitars, strings, horns, piano, banjo and synthesizers.  All this coupled with Vernon’s deep falsetto vocals makes for great ride.

The album is out now, check it out at Amazon MP3 – CD.

Just last month, Bon Iver appeared on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” to cover Bonnie Raitt and Donny Hathaway / Leon Russel and enthuse about Bruce Hornsby.  On June 21st,  Justin Vernon and the rest of Bon Iver returned to the show, continuing a big media week that also saw the release of their new self titled album.

Watch video of Bon Iver performing “Holocene” below.  As Questo of the roots Tweeted, “‘Holocene’ might be the most beautiful moment on @latenightjimmy. i think i just grew some wings.”
